I used to have a short bio up here with lists of publications, awards and such but we can skip over that part if you really want to know who I am, and why I take photographs like these. It will suffice to say my work has been published in most major photo magazines, won many awards, and I’m involved with far too many other projects to mention.
I am so passionate about wilderness adventure, that it’s really impossible for me to anything else with my life besides landscape photography. The art of photographing the landscape is the purest expression of my soul. You can’t capture images like this unless you let nature come to you, first. And in doing so I have devoted my life to the land, spending around 200 days each year out there with my camera, and often, with my loving partner Annie. I want to live a simple life. I have no kids, and the next check is probably going to be for travel first. I’ve seen some amazing things out there and have too many stories to mention, yet I am absolutely driven to capture the next rare, fleeting, magic moment I am fortunate enough witness. I never tire of it. I want people to see, to remember and to be moved to care for the natural world.
Wilderness photography is infinite. I don’t need to go far, really. These images, they are all taken in the Western portions of North America, most often right here in Oregon. It’s not about where you are, but how you see it. I see that 99% of the forests in this state have been clear-cut, but I want to show you how much beauty still remains, and I want you to know, just how undeniably precious these lands are in their preservation. We NEED wilderness. Now more than ever. As we grow increasingly complex as a society and bound to our own creations, the wilderness experience becomes ever more important to help balance our lives. There is a deep connection here unlike anything else that remains hidden in today’s fast-paced world of mass-transit, fast food, electronic everything and instant gratification. There is a certain freedom that comes only when we are immersed in the natural world. When I come to the wilderness I experience something much greater than ourselves, and it is these journeys that have shaped every aspect of my life.
***NO SIGNIFICANT SUBJECT MATTER IN ANY OF THE IMAGES WAS ADDED OR REMOVED DIGITALLY. WHEN DIGITAL ADJUSTMENTS OR CORRECTIONS ARE MADE, IT IS ALWAYS LIMITED TO FINE TUNING OF EXPOSURE, COLOR AND TONES. ABSOLUTELY NONE OF THE IMAGES HERE ARE COMPUTER GENERATED! It is my opinion that if we are to truly appreciate the wilderness through photographic images, we must adhere to this as photographers first and foremost. The photographs were captured on a variety of professional film and digital formats
I must mention the great gift that the late Galen Rowell gave us with his photography. His adventureous vision, his philosophies and his teachings. His combination of mind, body and spirt will likely never grace our lives again. Never forget any of those that came before you. Never be afraid to explore, to wander, to find a new direction. Share the beauty of this wonderful life and this wonderful Earth so they may be here forever.
