THE ORIGINAL 'IN-CAMERA' IMAGE
The image you see here is unmodified in any way and is exactly how my camera recorded this scene over Oregon’s Painted Hills ‘In-Camera’. To control the broad range of light from brighter sky to shadowed hills, I used a Neutral Density Graduated Filter. Neutral means there is no change in color. Density means less light passes through the filter. Graduated means the filter is darker on one half than the other and is inserted into a holder to allow the photographer to place the graduation where needed.
My digital SLR camera was set at a Color Temperature of 5400 degrees. In low light conditions such as this early morning scene, this exposure was initially rendered unnaturally cool just as it would have been on most films. Blue shifts are common in darker conditions without a dominant light source or adjustment to Color Temperature. Fortunately, processing the RAW image I am able to make necessary adjustments to correct color, exposure (if needed) and contrast.
